Summary
Drives truck to transport materials in packaged form to and from specified destinations, such as plants or within industrial yards. Makes direct contact with our customers with the purpose to load and/or unload cargo then safely transport it within specified time frames.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  •  Managing a tractor trailer through all types of weather and traffic conditions
  •  Operate a commercial vehicle safely at all times and for extended periods
  •  Following rules and regulations pertaining to driving
  •  Apply knowledge of commercial driving regulations
  •  Backing in 53’ trailer to dock to load/unload
  •  Hook and unhook tractor and raise and lower landing gear
  •  Maintain phone, radio, or PeopleNet communications with dispatch to receive load/delivery instructions
  •  Verify load against shipping papers
  •  Communicating with shippers or receivers
  •  Maintain accurate and legible truck log according to state and federal regulations
  •  Load and unload trailer with mechanical devices
  •  Inspect truck equipment and supplies, such as tires, lights, breaks, gas, oil and water
  •  Perform emergency roadside repairs, installing light bulbs, fuses, tire chains, and spark plugs
  •  Starting the workday on-time and remaining on-time for customers through the workday
  •  Regular attendance at work on a predictable schedule

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  •  One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS
  •  Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  •  Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

    REASONING ABILITY
  •  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.__

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
  •  Commercial Driver License (CDL)

Current DOT Medical Certificate

  • Able to successfully use the following
    o Pallet jack
    o Tandem puller
    o Computer
    o Various hand tools
    o Communication devise, such as: two way radio, mobile phone, PeopleNet system
    o 5th wheel puller
  •  Able to adjust vision to the following
    o Sunlight
    o Oncoming headlights
    o Dark of night with and without exterior lighting
  •  Able to adjust to various road conditions/hazards
    o Bad weather
    o Construction zones
    o High traffic areas
    o Driving in unknown/unfamiliar areas

The Employee may be required to lift up to 100 pounds on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the Employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions and vibrations. The Employee is occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts; and fumes and airborne particles.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but individual must be able to maintain focus.

Drivers may be subject to irregular work schedules, temperature and weather extremes, and long trips, short notice for assignment of a trip, tight delivery schedules, and delays enroot and waiting upon loading and unloading and possible breakdowns. Other stresses; isolation, fatigue related to driving a large commercial motor vehicle on crowded streets, highways, and in congested rail yards in varied weather conditions.
