Director, Student Innovation and Scholarly Research


Job Summary
The Director, Student Innovation and Scholarly Research provides strategic vision, leadership, administrative supervision, and day-to-day management in alignment with consistently achieving the SISR mission and financial objectives. The Director facilitates the strategic plan objective to elevate scholarship at FGCU. The Director determines program and operational objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with high autonomy. SISR serves to engage students in scholarly activities and research.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for the strategic alignment, long-term planning, reporting and management oversight of SISR;
  • Leads strategic planning, mission, and vision related to the areas of responsibility. Primary decision maker;
  • Translates strategic and tactical business plans into operational plans. Has latitude to make operational decisions within broadly defined parameters, requiring a high level of judgment;
  • Directs the efforts of and supervises SISR staff; sets performance standards and accountability. Has the authority to propose, uphold, modify, or revoke proposed dismissals or suspension notices; assists with aligning students with faculty mentors
  • Formulates and administers the annual operating budget. With appropriate approval, may procure agreements for materials or services;
  • Advises senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects;
  • Responsible for ensuring that all activities comply with university, state, and federal regulations; ensures that research compliance is in place prior to expenditure of funds for student activities
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships throughout the University; creation of advisory board with internal and external members
  • Oversees communications, promotions, philanthropy, and public relations for the SISR to achieve goals and objectives;
  • Exercises independent decision-making pertinent to the areas of responsibility with the AVPR's guidance;
  • Accountability for budget and following proper operating procedures applicable in their areas of responsibility;
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of practices, Policies, Regulations, legislation, etc., that affects short- and long-term responsibilities;
  • Collaborates with deans or upper-level administrators who are members of the FGCU leadership team;
  • Responsibility for the unit's creative ideation, innovation and thought leadership;
  • Monitors the activities of SISR to consider the need for change to respond to the needs of stakeholders;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Appropriate educational credentials as required by faculty rank of Professor and progressively responsible managerial experience.
  • A track record of publications/presentations, scholarly work or research involving students is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with student scholarly organizations at the local, regional or national level such as the Council of Undergraduate Research.
  • Experience with sponsored program funding that has facilitated student involvement and research.
  • Publication/presentation record with students.
  • Prior record of flexibility for student centered activities including presentations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Please add
  • Knowledge of required regulatory and ethical aspects of scholarly activities and research.
  • Ability and experience to work with undergraduate and graduate students for scholarly activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully plan and implement large-scale events for students.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
  • Ability to effectively manage the work of others and lead collaborative teams.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in student scholar activities.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs for graduate and undergraduate students for scholarly pursuits.
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary for student activities.


Special Instructions to Applicants

Appointment will be made at a faculty rank of Full Professor on a 12-month out-of-unit multi-year appointment basis available July 2024.

The start date of the position will be determined in consultation with the finalist selected.
