Remote Sr Software Engineer, Editorial Experimentation

We are searching for an innovative, user-focused engineer to join a team responsible for experimenting with new ways to package, distribute, and promote McClatchy's journalism. The ideal candidate will be passionate about smart design and excited to build newsroom tools and reader-facing experiences that push the boundaries of news products. This is a newsroom position ideal for an ambitious self-starter who demonstrates a high level of expertise in all facets of web application development and wants to learn and grow within a creative team.
Responsibilities:
- Develop web apps, APIs, utility scripts, and other technical solutions for experimental local journalism products.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify scalable solutions to complex content engineering challenges.
- Implement new and improve existing CI/CD pipelines and testing processes.
- Research existing and potential vendor technologies and recommend suitable solutions.
- Build and test prototypes to rapidly validate early product designs and assumptions.
- Communicate and document technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Strong fundamental skills in HTML and CSS, including demonstrable experience implementing best practices for responsive and mobile design, performance, SEO, and accessibility.
- 5+ years of experience writing production-ready JavaScript, with a strong foundation with a modern frontend library like React.
- Expertise with a backend language like Golang or Python.
- Experience using and developing REST APIs with the ability to isolate and identify API issues.
- Experience working with complex content using JSON and XML.
- Comfortable using Git and Github.
- Hands-on experience in configuring and operating CI/CD pipeline tools like GitHub Actions.
- Experience with AWS management including S3, ECS, and Lambda.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a thorough understanding of software development and QA workflows.
- Curiosity and a willingness to try new things, learn, and adapt.
- Must have authorization to work in the US.
Nice to have:
- Familiarity with paywall and subscription management tools, like Zephr.
- Experience with various CMS software (Escenic, Ghost) and related integrations.
- Knowledge of data science and machine learning tools.
Prior journalism experience is a strong plus.
