Position Summary:
Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Marine Fisheries Acoustic Telemetry Senior Scientist in the Biology department, which is part of the School of Science. This is a grant-funded position for up to two years (2023 - 2025) through a contract with Monmouth University for fisheries monitoring related to offshore wind development off the New Jersey coast. The incumbent will work as part of a growing team within the research labs of Dunton and Adolf at Monmouth University, working on acoustic telemetry and eDNA monitoring of various offshore wind development areas.

The incumbent will coordinate and lead field research related to assessing marine fish communities using acoustic telemetry as a monitoring tool in offshore wind areas. The incumbent will primarily be responsible for deploying and maintaining a large offshore (up to 50 miles offshore) Innovasea acoustic telemetry array and surgically tagging multi-species, including elasmobranchs and finfish. Ability to operate small boats, independently lead fisheries sampling seasonally in offshore conditions, and work with partner commercial/recreational fishing industries, as well as other academic institutions is a must. The incumbent will also be expected to lead report and manuscript writing, data analysis, presentations at national meetings, and contribute to outreach and education.

This is an in-person, on-campus, non-remote position.

Other Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, marine biology, marine science, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Two (2) years experience working with acoustic telemetry of fish, fisheries science, fisheries monitoring, or related areas of marine science.
  • Experience with surgical techniques for implanting acoustic transmitters (ESA listed species preferred but not required).
  • Experience downloading/maintaining acoustic telemetry equipment.
  • Experience handling, organizing, and processing acoustic telemetry data.
  • Experience analyzing acoustic telemetry data.
  • Experience working on a variety of vessels offshore (up to 50 nautical miles), including scientific, commercial, and recreational charters.
  • Routinely lift up to 25 lbs. and, on occasion, may be expected to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and potentially work early mornings, nights, weekends, and long days during sampling seasons.






Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in marine biology, marine science, or related field; PhD Preferred or MS and additional experience
  • Experience independently leading field research projects including project management (e.g. scheduling and implementing sampling to meet project objectives)
  • Experience using a variety of techniques to sample fishes including but not limited to gillnetting, trawl, long-line, pots/traps, rod-reel.
  • Leading or conducting field research
  • 2+ years experience with Innovasea acoustic telemetry equipment
  • Experience analyzing/visualizing acoustic telemetry data in R, ARCGIS, or equivalent programs.
  • Experience with maintaining large datasets and database management.
  • Ability to operate small boats independently
  • Ability to generate peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations from collected data.
  • Have strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt and make decisions in a remote field environment
