About Facilities

The mission of the Pellissippi State Facilities is to provide consistent and quality maintenance, operations, custodial, and facility planning services in a customer oriented, efficient, and responsible manner for students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to collect and process materials from indoor and outdoor recycle bins at all buildings at all campuses for the purpose of supporting the college recycling program.

Essential Functions:

60% Check all inside and outside recycle bins on all campuses for the purpose of recycling. Empty bins as necessary, clean bins and replace bags. Collect all loose cardboard boxes and other materials that are too large to fit into the bins from departments in the college for recycling.

10% Collect metals from industrial labs for recycling.

20% Sort recycling materials from all sources. Deposit sorted materials into the recycling trailers.

5% Hitch the recycle trailer to the truck and deliver collected recycling materials to the recycle facility for emptying.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience: One year custodial, recycle material worker, or sanitation department worker experience preferred.

Skills/Abilities: Understanding of and interest in sustainability/recycling in higher education. Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and the public. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks. Must be able to use a personal computer. Must Possess a valid TN driver's license. Additionally, the ability to drive a 20ft trailer and operate hydraulic machinery effectively and efficiently is required.

Key Result Areas: The volume of recycled items at the College. The amount of trash that is taken to landfills.

Scope of Responsibility: This person will receive routine guidance from their supervisor regarding the duties of the position and how they relate and are supported by the policies, procedures and precedents set by the Facilities Department and the College. Employee shall abide by all college policies and procedures. Employee should be able to prioritize work and make reasonable decisions based on the direction of their supervisor and the situation at hand.

Physical Demands: Walking, standing, sitting, driving and lifting are all essential in this position. The employee should be able to lift up to 60 lbs. Regular lifting of items such as bags of recycled items and boxes of liner bags will be required. The employee is also expected to travel between campuses. The employee must be able to hear large equipment and associated sounds such as reverse signal sounds. The employee must be able to visually check and empty recycle bins. The employee must be able to see to drive state vehicles that are towing large industrial trailers. The employee must be able to distinguish the color between browns, whites, and other pastel colors.

The employee will sometimes work in a classroom and regularly in an outdoor environment. Some campus events take place outside during the cooler and hotter months and the employee should be prepared for cold, heat, and sun exposure. The employee also must travel to and walk about each campus. Employee must be able to drive state vehicle that have attachable towing trailers without incident for up to two hours at a time to site campuses to pick-up recycling; and will be required to get in and out of large trucks and trailers.

Hazards: Moderate possibility of injury, driving, lifting, hauling, and/or contagious illness when touching items collected for recycle. Also, exposure to recycling facilities can result in cuts from broken glass, mechanical injuries, potential fall risks, hazards, and all possible contamination therein.
