Job Description

Summary

To perform skilled work at a journeyman level in the installation, operation, maintenance, service and repair of microprocessor based distributed automation systems. (Automation systems control and monitor: life safety, security and miscellaneous other building systems.) In addition, but not limited to, must be able to do typical, electrical fieldwork. Work is subject to inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade but is primarily reviewed through observation of results.

Essential Functions

Install/Update/Repair of microprocessor based distributed life safety and security automated systems in University Buildings and facilities.

Journeyman level experience in the electrical field is preferred. Must be able to do standard electrical fieldwork. To include, but not limited to, normal commercial, industrial electrical work.

Functional contacts include co-workers, other service department employees, and administrative personnel at the job locations, University staff, students and building occupants.

Perform preventative maintenance on microprocessor based distributed automation systems and associated control equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions with microprocessor based distributed automation systems and associated electrical and pneumatic control equipment.

Install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair variable speed drives for electric motors.

Operate personal computer software to commission, maintain, and troubleshoot distributed automation systems.

Evaluate complex factors and malfunctions in building life safety and security automated systems and miscellaneous other building systems and take corrective actions.

Assist in or perform work on the other mechanical systems as capable.

Perform repairs/preventative maintenance on microprocessor based distributed automation systems and associated control equipment.

Prepare records, detailed reports, recommendations and similar information for supervisory and management use.

Respond to after hour emergency conditions to assist in the restoration of services.

7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications

Personnel in the Building Controls System Technician employee development program:
  • This job is a promotional step from a Building Controls Technician II, and requires successful completion of skill assessments and two years of experience as a Building Controls System Technician II.
  • Up to 1.5 years of relevant prior experience relative to the specific trade, may be counted toward this requirement.
All Personnel:
  • A high school graduate with one year of university or technical training in electronics, electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • Five years of experience in the skilled maintenance, installation and repair of distributed automation systems for buildings and associated electrical and pneumatic control equipment.
    • During the first six months of employment, must complete the same skills assessment required of a Building Controls Systems Technician II as outlined in the Building Controls System Technician Employee Development Program.
  • Knowledge of building codes is preferred.
  • Skill in use and operation of tools, equipment and materials necessary to complete the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • A valid State of Missouri Driver's License must be held and maintained by incumbents in the position.
  • A person working in this classification will need to:
    • Grasp, lift, carry and set down objects of moderate weight (50 lbs.) on a regular basis
    • Grasp, lift and pull electrical/electronic cabling and wiring on a regular basis
    • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and staging on an occasional basis
    • Ability to get into and work in hot, moist, confined spaces on an occasional basis
Preferred Qualifications

Preference given for experience in electrician trade.

Must possess a valid driver's license, which will allow legal operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Missouri.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $18.13 - $30.33 per hour

GGS Grade: G
