Registered Nurse, RN - Wound Ostomy Continence

Experience in wound and ostomy care (WOC) preferred. If no WOC experience, team member must successfully obtain wound and ostomy certifications within 12 months of hire. Examples include, but are not limited to, Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON); Certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (CWOCN); Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN); and Certified Ostomy Care Nurse (COCN).

The wound ostomy care nurse partners with interprofessional teams to provide consultation, education, leadership, and direct care for patients with wound, ostomy, fistula, and incontinence needs. Other responsibilities include:

  • Actively participating within an interdisciplinary team, providing advanced clinical guidance to physicians and nursing staff regarding the management of complex wounds, fistulas, moisture management, and pressure injuries. Effectively advocating for patient-centered care.
  • Providing leadership in hospital-wide pressure injury prevention initiatives, wound care, and ostomy care, to include supporting pressure injury prevalence data collection; evidence-based policies, procedures, and protocols; and advisement of appropriate support surfaces, products, and staff decision-making algorithms.
  • Providing consultation and direct patient care for new ostomy patients. Performing appropriate preoperative stoma site marking. Developing and conducting preoperative and postoperative ostomy education, ostomy care plan for the patient and family, and emotional support. Recommending materials and resources needed for ostomy care at home.
  • Evaluating innovative wound, ostomy, and skin care products and devices. Influencing product choice through collaboration with other departments and teams.
  • Developing WOC-related policies, procedures, and practice protocols or guidelines.
  • Providing education to patients, family, and other healthcare professionals individually and in group settings.
  • Developing and conducting educational programs and clinical instruction for UVA Health staff.

Position Compensation Range: $39.90 - $53.00 Hourly


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.
  • Experience: 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Licensure: Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.
